    Rusyn Language Study Group

“Kick-Off Meeting of the Rusyn Language Study Group”

    Presented by

    Pat Onufrak

On Saturday, December 1, from 2:00- 3:30, we will be having the long-awaited first meeting of people who are interested in studying Rusyn. As you may already know, we will be paving the way and showing the interest that many in the Rusyn community have regarding such language study.

Certainly, life would be easier if we had an English language-based text for studying Rusyn. And is it too much to dream that we could also get CDs? At this time, it is a bit too much to hope for, but help is coming in the form of a textbook. However, that may take a little while. Fortunately, we do have simple Rusyn texts (available through the CRRC), CDs of Rusyn radio programs, and the knowledge that many have successfully taught themselves Rusyn and other languages in the past.

So bring your ideas to a roundtable discussion, which will be preceded by an overview of Rusyn and its place in the world.

What to bring: Any Rusyn language resources that you already own and a sense of adventure.

What to leave home: Anxieties and concerns about learning Rusyn and the Cyrillic alphabet. (Our coordinator has studied foreign languages in many settings and is determined to make your participation as stress-free as possible.)

Contact Pat Onufrak at rusynska@aol.com to express your interest in attending the organizational meeting. Please include information on any prior foreign language experience and whether or not you can read Cyrillic.

Pat Onufrak has an M.A. in Russian Language and Literature from the University of Toronto. She has tutored basic Russian and, most recently, she received a certificate from ProLiteracy America that qualifies her to tutor English as a Second Language. She firmly believes that if her student, a 73-year-old Salvadoran, can learn English, then you can learn Rusyn!
